Doha Ladies
2002/2003
Season Report

(Official Sponsors for The Doha Ladies Rugby Team)
Unfortunately this season, ladies rugby in the gulf has been at an all time low. Some of this is due to the unforeseen circumstances of the gulf war but mainly due to teams around the gulf not being able to side 7 ladies to play or travel to fixtures.
Doha Ladies however were still strong as ever in numbers and spirits (of both kinds!) and managed to play in all tournaments this season home and away. They played in Bahrain 7's at the beginning of the season, Doha Round Robin in October and Abu Dhabi in February, which with a tremendous effort once again, meant we won and retained a 3 year undefeated top spot in the league. Dubai 7's in December was also attended along with a huge number of supporters and again for the 3rd year running, Doha ladies retained the sevens title by beating Abu Dhabi in the final. Huge thanks have got to go Paul Rimmer our coach.
Doha Oryx also stayed high in numbers and spirits this season. They managed to attend 2 fixtures (Doha and Abu Dhabi) and although they came 5th in the league, they continue to go from strength to strength and they are a great asset to have as a second ladies team in the club. They must be credited for being the only team all season to score a try against Doha Ladies first team! Thanks go to Damian Gray for helping coach the Oryx.
It is sincerely hoped that next season more gulf countries will be able to get teams to play in the league. Match practice is the best way to increase the standard of the game; therefore teams need to play preferably at least once a month. This is important for ladies rugby with its progression onto the Asian scene but mostly for development in the region. More friendlys can hopefully be organised mid season to help with this, not only between gulf countries but also against Asian countries. This will hopefully then benefit the league teams and also the AGRFU international ladies team.
For the past 2 years AGRFU ladies have excelled themselves winning silverware in the Hong Kong 7's tournament. Improved performance and knowledge of the game have boosted spirits and they need to go back again and keep doing better each year, which I am sure they will. Doha ladies this year managed to have 8 of their first team players selected for the AGRFU squad who played in Hong Kong 7's on March 27th/28th. These players were:
Helen Martin (Captain)
Jane Shaw (Vice-Captain)
Claire Rimmer
Jane Cassells
Jo Woodland
George
Eite
Danielle Stone
Grainne O'Donoghue
A fantastic achievement for the club and the ladies not only to be involved in the largest rugby 7's tournament in the world but to bring back with them to Doha the international shield. Huge thanks to Paul Rimmer and Andy Mexsom (Manager).
