Match Reports

Hong Kong

The Arabian Gulf team were drawn in the same group as New Zealand, Hong Kong and Thailand. The second group consisted of USA, Kazakhstan, China and Japan.

The first games were on Thursday. Unfortunately at the first training session on the Wednesday, Helen hurt her foot again and could not take any playing part in the tournament. On the first day, the Arabian Gulf team were well beaten by New Zealand and lost a close game against Hong Kong (another one of those games you manage to lose knowing full well you should have won!). They did, however, beat the Thailand side.

That win put them into the bowl competition on the Friday playing against Japan in the semi's. They ended up beating Japan and then played in the bowl final and beat China by about 15 points, (full scores to be given at a later date). This made them bowl winners and placed them 5th overall. A very respectable performance.

In the main tournament, New Zealand went on to win the final against the USA.

The bowl trophy is back in Doha as it was stated that the Doha "girls team" deserved it due to their commitment and playing of Rugby in the Gulf region.

Bahrain 10s (Ladies 7s)

Doha Ladies continued their success in Gulf Rugby winning five out of six games in their recent trip to Bahrain. The Bahrain 10s tournament (Ladies 7s), saw them lose to a strong Kuwait side in a fierce battle for first place. In their first tournament since last season the ladies amassed an impressive 21 tries with a total of 7 conversions. In Doha's first game Jeddah didn't even get a chance to get into their stride as a confident Helen Martin scored 2 dynamic tries in the first two minutes and Ann Foy scored 3 tries in an easy run producing a total of 8 tries and a final score 46 - 0. Try scorers included Claire Rimmer, Nessa Rochford and Hanna Stapley. Their second victory came with 3 magnificent tries from George Eite and more from Helen Martin and Hanna Stapley to give a game score 29 - 0. In the third game an alert Nessa Rochford made a beautifully received pop to an eagerly awaiting Claire Rimmer leading to victory against Abu Dhabi. Not that Abu Dhabi were ever going to be an easy scalp scoring 12 points against Doha's 17. It soon became obvious there was much more to coach Simon Firth's creating a successful team than luck. Doha took a 27 - 0 win against Bahrain again from consistent try scorers Helen, Ann and George. The first disappointment of the day came in the final against Kuwait with two tries disallowed in the first half, one coming from the frustrated captain Grainne O'Donaghue. Then, we all remember the moments when Ann Foy took the ball on two great runs only to be tackled on two occasions within ten yards of the try line. A breathless Doha were too far behind to pull back as Kuwait's two tries took them to an exhausting and well earned 10 - 0 win. For all their mistakes player of the tournament was not an easy decision with some great support and tackling from Niamh O'Sullivan and great runs all round. However Ann Foy showed enough strength, skill and determination to secure the title. Doha left with runners up medals in their hands and an eager desire to make their return something to remember at Dubai 7s this month. Once again let's give it to the Ladies: tired, disappointed and tested they will fight on. Can they beat them? Yes, they can.

Doha League Tournament - Match Report

On Friday 25th January, Doha Rugby Club hosted a Ladies Gulf League Round Robin Competition. The poor showing of Gulf teams didn't deflect from the enthusiasm of supporters and players who were present. A special note of thanks should go to Abu Dhabi Ladies for their enthusiastic participation.

The first game saw the visitors take on the Doha Ladies second team, Doha Oryx; a great game that was dominated by Doha. Anne Foy scored the first try early on in the game, outpacing Abu Dhabi with an impressive sprint down the wing. Abu Dhabi replied with a try just before half time.

In the second half of the game, Doha displayed outstanding defence, epitomised by ferocious tackling by Suzie Lloyd. The game was decided by superb possession of the ball, culminating in Anne Foy's second try and an outstanding conversion by Anne Provencher. Doha Oryx won the game 12 points to 5.

The second game saw the rejuvenated Doha Oryx team take on the Doha Ladies First team and what a memorable game it proved to be! Doha 1sts set the tone of the game early on when George Eite scored an exciting try. The two teams traded attacking movements but no points were added before the half time break.

In the second half, both teams resumed play with great determination. Doha Oryx brought the crowd to a frenzy when they equalised with a superb try by Jo Woodland. With the game poised in the final minutes, Ashley Hayes broke through the resilient Doha 1st defence to score a try, sealing a memorable victory for the Doha Oryx team. The try was beautifully converted by Anne Provencher, making the overall score, Doha Oryx 12 points to Doha 1st's 5 points.

The final game of the competition witnessed Doha 1st team regain much pride with a crushing 37 points to 5 victory against Abu Dhabi. The game was closely contested in the first few minutes and after an early try by Claire Rimmer, Abu Dhabi replied with a converted try to lead 7:5. However, Doha gradually dominated the match and were soon scoring regularly with tries to follow from Niamh O'Sullivan, George Eite and Anne Foy, beautfilly converted by Grainne O'Donoghue.
