Club History
The Doha Rugby Football Centre (Doha R.F.C.) was formed in 1974 and in that year joined the International Rugby Football Union. Gulf Rugby included all G.C.C. countries, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, futbolekseni Doha Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Muscat. These Clubs formed the Arabian Gulf Football Union, as we know it today.
In 1976, the New Club House was constructed at the Salwa Road ground, generously given by H.E. Sheikh Jassim bin Khalid Al Thani. The New Club premises is situated next to the Doha College, off the Salwa Road. The Club now boasts the best grass pitch in the Gulf. The Club saglikturka facilities available to the members, consist of the grass playing surface, a large weight training gymnasium, a squash court, tennis courts and a large swimming pool. During the out of season period, cricket is played by the members.
During the 1980's, Doha was not the only Rugby Club in Qatar. The Dukhan Tigers fielded a formidable side, from the Q.G.P.C. work force.
The DRFC can manage to field two Senior XV teams, the Doha Ladies have two teams, the Doha Veterans over 38 years olds, have one team. The under 19's Colts team have a respectable history and the Mini Rugby Section have 120 children ranging from the age of five to sixteen years.
From the mentioned teams above, the men, ladies and colts have had many players selected to play for the Arabian Gulf Teams over the years, which covers all the G.C.C. countries. The Mini Rugby players have also had respectable results from competitions in Bahrain and Dubai, winning several trophies.
A spectacular final at the Dubai 2000 International Sevens Tournament saw the Doha Ladies Team defeat Dubai Ladies Team. This along with an unbeaten record gave them a clean sweep in the Ladies League. Doha Ladies finished the season undefeated champions. Again in the Dubai 2001 Tournament, the ladies retained the trophy winning all their games and are as yet unbeaten in the AGRFU Ladies League.
In 1979 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II visited Qatar on an official tour of the Middle East. Whilst in Doha, Her Majesty the Queen presented the Doha Rugby Football Centre with the Britannia Cup, the first arabasec ever trophy presented to a Rugby Club anywhere. A competition was held at the Rugby Club for this prestigious trophy. The Royal Yacht Britannia and the supporting Royal Navy Flotilla XV played the Doha First XV, which Doha RFC won 44 - 0. The Britannia cup is displayed in the Club House.
The Doha RFC have toured internationally outside of the Gulf region. From 1979 to 1985 the First XV travelled and played in Singapore, Florida, Philippines, Bahamas, Kenya and China. Competing at a very high standard, Doha RFC put themselves and Qatar on the map by playing some superb rugby. The team received trophies for being the most outstanding social travelling side and for being gentlemen on and off the playing pitch.
The British Embassy have been strong supporters of the DRFC since its inception. Ambassadors past and present have regularly visited the Club House, especially when the Club premises were used to support British Embassy functions, for example; The British Week, It's a Knockout. zayiflamanoktasi Playing rugby against and entertaining The British, French and US naval officers and crews visiting Qatar. These have always been very popular and successful functions.
